Herf's materials are powerful and unsettling, even to readers who are well at home with the literature on Nazism. He shows, intimately that has not previously been seen, how the Nazi war-time hate propaganda combined verbal attacks against Jews with attacks against the Allies. to those Nazi propagandists, the Jews were the enemy, standing behind and stage-managing the Allies.
Herf's interpretation differs in some respects from previous work by others. He holds that the Nazis' anti-Semitic propaganda in wartime was primarily totally different from what that they had exhausted the pre-war period: this war-time propaganda was, in his read, a deliberate incitement to commit the Holocaust, whereas previous campaigns had been no over "traditional" anti-Semitism.
Since the Nazis were never specific in their propaganda regarding the mass killing of Jews, Herf's assertions regarding their intentions during this propaganda can not be proven. Nevertheless, I realize his interpretations highly suggestive, if not conclusive.
Other aspects of Herf's interpretations of the war-time Nazi materials will be checked systematically. For a minimum of fifty years, students have practiced and developed strategies of content analysis, which, sadly, Herf doesn't use during this work. a minimum of 2 of his claims ought to are subjected to such analysis:
1) The relative prominence of anti-Semitic themes as compared to alternative themes, within the amount in question, may be a textbook example of the sort of drawback that content analysis is suitable.
